Manholes

Standard

Manholes | ASTM C478

Manholes are large precast concrete structures used in sanitary sewer systems and stormwater management. They provide access for inspection, maintenance, or direction changes in underground pipelines, and act as vents for sewer gases. TurnerCo supplies these as part of infrastructure systems compliant with industry standards.

Typical Components

  • Risers — vertical sections that set the top of the manhole to the appropriate grade.
  • Bases (with or without inverts) — bottom sections where pipes enter and exit; "invert" refers to the shaped channel inside to direct flow.
  • Cones — top tapered sections transitioning from larger diameter walls to smaller openings.
  • Flat lids — covers with different opening sizes.

Typical Sizes and Weights

Sizes commonly range from 48-inch to 120-inch diameters (and possibly others depending on project specification). Approximate weights vary by section type and diameter:

48" risers
~850 – 3,561 lbs
60" risers
~1,552 – 6,208 lbs
72" risers
~1,700 – 6,400 lbs
96" risers
~6,200 – 15,500 lbs
120" risers
~10,132 – 25,330 lbs

Plus numerous base, invert, cone, and flat lid configurations.

Corrosion Protection

Many are available with an antimicrobial, anti-corrosive treatment to protect against bacteria-generated sulfuric acid corrosion — often specified for sewer applications where gas and effluent expose concrete to harsh conditions.
